Course Objective

This advanced course provides an in-depth and systematic understanding of the Qur’an through the study of the history of Tafseer, its principles and rules, and Qur’anic sciences. 6 sections, 72 lectures, with presentation sessions in selected modules

  • Lecture 1: Introduction and definition of Tafseer, meaning and importance of Tafseer, difference between Tafseer, Ta’wil, and translation, conditions and qualification of Mufassir
  • Lecture 2: Characteristics of Tafseer ul Qur’an in the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him)
  • Lecture 3: Tafseer by the Sahabah, major Mufassireen among Sahaba (Ibn Abbas, Ibn Mas‘ud, Ubayy ibn Ka‘b, and others)
  • Lecture 4: Tafseer by the Tabi‘un, notable schools of Tafseer (Makkah, Madinah, Kufa), famous Tabi‘een Mufassireen
  • Lecture 5: Early compilation of Tafseer, first Tafseer works, development of Tafseer literature in the first 3 centuries
  • Lecture 6: Classical Mufassireen and their approaches, Tafseer bi’l-Ma’thur (narrative based Tafseer), key scholars
  • Lecture 7: Classical Mufassireen and their approaches, Tafseer bi’l-Ra’y (opinion-based Tafseer), key contributors
