Course Objective
This advanced course provides an in-depth and systematic understanding of the Qur’an through the study of the history of Tafseer, its principles and rules, and Qur’anic sciences. It equips students and professionals with the intellectual tools needed to engage with the Qur’an in a scholarly, analytical, and contextually relevant manner.

- Explain key disciplines of Qur’anic Sciences (‘Uloom al-Qur’an), including revelation, compilation, preservation, Makki and Madani classification, Asbab al-Nuzul, Qira’at, and Naskh.
- Apply the principles and rules of Tafseer to analyze selected Qur’anic passages in a structured and academically sound manner.
- Differentiate between classical and modern trends in Tafseer, conducting informed comparative analysis of various interpretative approaches.
- Critically engage with contemporary issues by drawing upon established Qur’anic interpretive frameworks.

6 sections, 72 lectures, with presentation sessions in selected modules
- Lecture 1: Introduction and definition of Tafseer, meaning and importance of Tafseer, difference between Tafseer, Ta’wil, and translation, conditions and qualification of Mufassir
- Lecture 2: Characteristics of Tafseer ul Qur’an in the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him)
- Lecture 3: Tafseer by the Sahabah, major Mufassireen among Sahaba (Ibn Abbas, Ibn Mas‘ud, Ubayy ibn Ka‘b, and others)
- Lecture 4: Tafseer by the Tabi‘un, notable schools of Tafseer (Makkah, Madinah, Kufa), famous Tabi‘een Mufassireen
- Lecture 5: Early compilation of Tafseer, first Tafseer works, development of Tafseer literature in the first 3 centuries
- Lecture 6: Classical Mufassireen and their approaches, Tafseer bi’l-Ma’thur (narrative based Tafseer), key scholars
